Search Console adds generative AI performance reports, making AI Overview traffic measurable

In June 2026, Google rolled out generative AI performance reports in Search Console, including dedicated views for Google Search and Google Discover, to help site owners understand how their pages appear in generative AI features such as "AI Overviews" and "AI Mode." For the first time, the previously murky "AI traffic" has an official, measurable definition. Where site owners previously had to estimate AI citations through third-party tools, they can now read official numbers directly in the Search Console dashboard.

What the reports show

The new data is included in the overall performance reports, with a separate view highlighting:

  • Impressions: how often your URLs appear in generative AI features across Google Search and Discover;
  • Pages: which specific URLs appear in AI features, useful for content review;
  • Country: the geographic distribution of your visibility;
  • Device: which devices users are on when they see your site (for search results);
  • Time granularity: trends by hour, day, week and month.

One note: the report stays aligned with the overall performance report's time range by default, and switching granularity (hour/day/week/month) does not change the data definition. For sites that just got the feature, early weeks can be noisy — hold off on conclusions until at least a month of data has accumulated.

How to read the report

Use it in three steps:

  1. Start with the totals: open the generative AI view and compare the last 30 days with the previous 90 days to see whether the trend is up or down;
  2. Then break down by page: switch to the Pages dimension, find the top 20 URLs, and look for shared topics or content types (how-to guides, data pages, comparison posts);
  3. Finally align with content: cross-reference the high-visibility pages with regular click data in SEO performance tracking to judge whether AI exposure actually drives visits.

What it means for SEO and content strategy

Site owners previously struggled to answer "is my content being cited by AI?" With these reports, you can see which articles are more likely to be referenced in AI Overviews and which topics generate visibility in AI Mode, then shift content resources toward high-return areas. Combined with the Search Console guide and SEO performance tracking, you can build a full content-to-exposure-to-click observation chain.

A real scenario: a tools blog found that clearly comparative articles like "X vs Y" got three times more AI Overview impressions than ordinary tutorials. The team shifted its content calendar toward decision-oriented pieces, and within two months those pages' AI impressions rose another ~50%. The report is not just for reading data — it is a signal for steering content production.

Notes

  • The reports are rolling out gradually to a subset of sites while Google tests and gathers feedback before a full rollout;
  • The data remains part of the overall performance reports and is tracked continuously, so AI and regular data stay connected;
  • Google encourages feedback on which dimensions matter most; more metrics may be added over time.

Working the report into your routine

Put the AI performance report into the same weekly sheet as regular SEO data, with three fixed actions:

  1. Weekly comparison: note the top 5 pages by AI Overview impressions and their change versus last week;
  2. Monthly review: align URLs that entered the top 20 with your content production records to see which topics deserve more investment;
  3. Trace anomalies: if AI impressions for a set of pages suddenly drop, first check recent changes to page structure, structured data, or robots rules.

The cadence is cheap (about ten minutes a week) but turns the team's perception of "AI traffic" from vague into comparable numbers. One clarification: the report measures impressions, not clicks. A citation inside an AI Overview is not the same as a user actually visiting your site. For a fuller picture, return to click and conversion data and treat AI exposure as the top of the funnel.

16IDC observations

Generative AI is reshaping search entry points, but the core logic has not changed: providing unique, valuable content is still the premise for AI visibility. The same thinking applies to candidate content for AI Mode — rather than chasing "which keyword gets cited," keep producing original, well-structured information that is worth citing. We recommend adding the AI performance report to your routine SEO monitoring now and using the data to guide content production.
