Project Overview
Bitcoin was proposed in 2008 by an anonymous individual or group using the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. The Genesis Block was mined on January 3, 2009, marking the launch of the world's first decentralized cryptocurrency. Bitcoin has no central organization or headquarters — it is a fully decentralized open-source protocol maintained by a global network of node operators, miners, and developers.
Bitcoin is the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, with the strongest consensus and highest security of any blockchain. Often referred to as "digital gold," it has a fixed maximum supply of 21 million coins and uses a Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism to generate new blocks. Bitcoin pioneered blockchain technology and sparked the entire cryptocurrency and Web3 industry.

Product Portfolio
⛓️ Blockchain Network
- Bitcoin Blockchain: The world's most secure PoW blockchain, recording and validating all BTC transactions
- Bitcoin Core: The reference client implementation, maintained by the global open-source developer community
- BTC (Bitcoin): Native cryptocurrency with a 21M supply cap; smallest unit is the Satoshi (1 BTC = 100M satoshis)
⚡ Layer 2 Scaling
- Lightning Network: Bitcoin's Layer 2 payment protocol enabling instant, low-cost micro-payment channels
- RGB Protocol: Smart contract and asset issuance protocol built on Bitcoin
- Taproot Assets: Token and asset protocol leveraging the Taproot upgrade
⛏️ Mining & Consensus
- PoW Mining: SHA-256 Proof of Work consensus mechanism; global hashrate securing the network
- Mining Pools: F2Pool, AntPool, ViaBTC aggregating computational power for collective mining
- ASIC Miners: Specialized Bitcoin mining hardware (Bitmain Antminer, MicroBT Whatsminer, etc.)
🔧 Protocol Upgrades
- SegWit (Segregated Witness): 2017 scaling upgrade optimizing block capacity and transaction efficiency
- Taproot: Major 2021 upgrade enhancing privacy, flexibility, and smart contract capabilities
- Ordinals (Inscriptions): NFT protocol on Bitcoin, allowing data inscription onto individual satoshis
Core Strengths
Unmatched Security: SHA-256 PoW combined with the world's largest computational network makes Bitcoin the most expensive blockchain to attack
Digital Gold Positioning: 21M supply cap, halving schedule, and decentralized issuance establish Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation
Maximum Decentralization: Thousands of independent nodes worldwide with no single controlling entity, offering the highest censorship resistance
Longest Track Record: Operating continuously since 2009 with zero downtime, proven through over 17 years of market cycles
Market Position
Bitcoin competes with or complements the following projects in the cryptocurrency market:
| Competitor | Comparison |
|---|---|
| Ethereum | Leading smart contract platform; Bitcoin focuses on store of value, Ethereum on programmable ecosystem |
| Litecoin | "Lite" version of Bitcoin with faster confirmation times, but far smaller market cap and hashrate |
| Bitcoin Cash | Forked from Bitcoin for larger blocks and lower fees, positioned as peer-to-peer electronic cash |
| Monero | Leading privacy coin focused on anonymous transactions; Bitcoin is transparent and traceable |
| Zcash | Zero-knowledge privacy coin; Bitcoin has weaker privacy features |
| USDT/USDC | Stablecoins for daily transactions and on-chain settlement; Bitcoin serves more as a value reserve |
