Chef (formerly Opscode) was founded in 2008 by Adam Jacob, Barry Steyn, Nathen Harvey, and Jesse Robbins in Seattle, Washington. It is a pioneer in configuration management and infrastructure automation. Chef uses Ruby-based Cookbook and Recipe models to define infrastructure desired states, and was one of the earliest tools to champion the "Infrastructure as Code" (IaC) engineering practice.
