Project Overview
Ethereum was proposed in 2013 by Vitalik Buterin and officially launched on July 30, 2015, with the Frontier release. It is the first general-purpose smart contract blockchain platform. The Ethereum Foundation (Stiftung), based in Zug, Switzerland, oversees ecosystem coordination and support. ETH is the native cryptocurrency of the network and the second-largest digital asset by market capitalization.
Ethereum pioneered smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps), building the largest blockchain developer ecosystem in the world. It catalyzed transformative innovations including DeFi (decentralized finance), NFTs (non-fungible tokens), and DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations). In September 2022, Ethereum completed "The Merge," transitioning from Proof of Work (PoW) to Proof of Stake (PoS), reducing energy consumption by 99.9%.

Market Position
Ethereum competes in the smart contract blockchain market with the following platforms:
| Competitor | Comparison |
|---|---|
| Solana | High-performance single-layer chain with much higher TPS, but lower decentralization |
| Cardano | Academic-driven PoS blockchain with slower development pace and smaller ecosystem |
| Polkadot | Interoperability-focused protocol with unique parachain architecture; smaller dev ecosystem |
| Avalanche | Subnet architecture for custom app-chains, EVM-compatible, TVL significantly lower than Ethereum |
| BNB Chain | Binance-backed EVM-compatible chain with low fees, but higher centralization |
| Bitcoin | Digital gold positioning, no smart contract functionality, but highest market cap and consensus |
