Founders & History
Ledger was founded by three French entrepreneurs and engineers. Eric Larchevêque brought expertise in cybersecurity and embedded systems; Thomas France specialized in cryptography and security architecture; and Nicolas Bacca was an expert in embedded operating systems. The team recognized that cryptocurrency users faced significant security threats from exchange hacks and private key leaks, and set out to create a hardware solution that keeps private keys completely offline. Ledger's proprietary operating system BOLOS (Blockchain Open Ledger Operating System) remains one of its core technological differentiators.

Core Strengths
Secure Element Technology: Ledger hardware wallets use Secure Element (SE) chips — the same grade used in passports and bank cards — certified to Common Criteria EAL5+. Private keys are generated and stored within the SE and never leave the device, fundamentally eliminating remote attack vectors.
BOLOS Operating System: Ledger's proprietary BOLOS provides independent secure execution environments for each application. Even if one app contains a vulnerability, it cannot affect other apps or compromise private keys. BOLOS is built on the principle of "separate, isolate, verify."
Ledger Live Ecosystem: Ledger Live is more than an asset management tool — it's an application platform aggregating 80+ crypto services. Users can buy, swap, and stake cryptocurrencies directly within Ledger Live without leaving the secure environment.
Brand Trust: Ledger is the most recognized hardware wallet brand globally, with its security architecture validated through years of market testing and multiple security audits. With 6M+ users and a $1.5B+ valuation, its market leadership is well-established.
Market Position
Ledger holds a leading position in the global hardware wallet market, competing with:
- Trezor (Satoshilabs): One of the first hardware wallets, founded in Prague, Czech Republic (2013), known for open-source transparency
- SafePal: Binance-invested hardware wallet supporting mobile management and multi-chain assets
- KeepKey: Originally launched by ShapeShift, now independently operated
- Coldcard: Bitcoin-focused hardware wallet emphasizing minimalist design and air-gapped signing
- OneKey: Chinese hardware wallet brand supporting multi-chain assets through community-driven development
- NGRAVE: Belgian hardware wallet known for the ZERO full-touchscreen wallet
