Shopify Launches Agentic Commerce: Buying Directly Inside AI Conversations

A growing number of consumers are turning to AI agents to find and compare products instead of browsing a store, typing a search query, or scrolling a feed. This is agentic commerce: AI agents help shoppers discover, compare, and purchase products — all within a conversation.

The signals are strong: in Q1 2026, AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores grew 8x year over year, while orders from AI-powered searches increased nearly 13x. New buyers are placing orders through AI channels at nearly twice the rate of other channels.

How agentic commerce works on Shopify

In traditional ecommerce, a shopper searches, browses, and checks out. In agentic commerce, an AI agent handles some or all of those steps. Behind the experience, a series of systems work together:

  1. Product data flows to AI agents. Shopify Catalog structures and syndicates product information — titles, descriptions, images, pricing, inventory, shipping — to every connected AI platform in real time, so a merchant's brand and products are accurately represented rather than relying on scraped data.
  2. AI agents surface products in conversation. Based on the shopper's question, the agent surfaces relevant data from Catalog. Ranking factors can include data quality, relevance, availability, pricing, and engagement signals.
  3. The transaction is processed through Shopify Checkout. On ChatGPT, the buyer completes the purchase on the merchant's online store via an in-app browser; on Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Mode, through an embedded checkout. Shopify handles payment, tax, fraud detection, and fulfillment.
  4. The order appears in the merchant's admin with attribution showing which AI channel drove the sale. The merchant remains the merchant of record.

How UCP makes this work across platforms

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), co-developed by Shopify and Google, is an open standard defining how AI agents transact with merchants — covering cart creation, checkout, payment, and post-purchase — across any platform and any payment processor. UCP is backed by Amazon, American Express, Etsy, Mastercard, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce, Stripe, Target, Walmart, and Visa. When a new AI platform adopts UCP, Shopify merchants are automatically ready to sell there with no extra integration.

Optimize product data with Shopify Catalog

AI agents don't browse a store the way a human does; they read structured data. Using machine learning and billions of transaction signals, Shopify Catalog infers additional product attributes that make products more discoverable — a candle listed under "home decor" might be identified as a popular Mother's Day gift. This is the core of generative engine optimization (GEO): optimizing product data not for search engine crawlers, but for AI agents that retrieve, rank, and recommend products in response to natural language queries.

Sell through AI channels with Agentic Storefronts

Agentic Storefronts is a sales channel in Shopify admin that connects a merchant's products to AI shopping platforms — no apps to install, no custom integrations, and no extra transaction fees. Supported channels include ChatGPT (OpenAI), Microsoft Copilot, and AI Mode in Google Search plus the Gemini app. Merchants manage per-channel direct checkout toggles and choose which AI partners receive their product data.

For businesses running ecommerce on other platforms, the Shopify Agentic Plan lets them sync products to Shopify Catalog and sell through AI channels without replatforming — no monthly subscription fee; businesses pay standard payment rates when products sell through channels powered by Shopify Checkout.

Merchant Setup Path and Channel Comparison

Going live is straightforward, built on three steps — "data → channel → checkout": confirm every product field in Catalog is complete and truthful (title, images, inventory, shipping), open the Agentic Storefronts sales channel in admin, then decide per channel whether to enable direct checkout. A quick channel comparison makes it easier to decide where to invest first:

AI channel How buyers complete the purchase Audience Activation bar
ChatGPT Back to the merchant's store via in-app browser US-facing buyers Rolling out in batches after application
Microsoft Copilot Embedded checkout powered by UCP Merchants discoverable in Catalog Automatic
Google AI Mode / Gemini Native embedded checkout Brands selling to US buyers Expanding gradually

One detail worth noting: channels differ in how "closed" the purchase loop is. ChatGPT routes buyers back to the merchant's site, so you keep your own membership and repeat-purchase relationship; embedded-checkout channels are lighter, and buyers may not perceive the "brand store" at all. Channel selection is therefore not just a traffic question but a brand-touchpoint question that should be designed together with your membership system.

16IDC perspective

For independent store and cross-border teams, agentic commerce means "sales channels" are expanding into AI conversations. To be recommended correctly, structured, complete, and real-time product data is the foundation.
