How Stable Is the 9929 VPS Network Route?
VMRack’s September 4, 2026 article examines why AS9929 stability matters when choosing a US VPS for users in mainland China. The guide covers the route’s architecture, peak-hour behavior, testing methods and the infrastructure factors that determine whether a premium route remains reliable in daily use.
What AS9929 means
AS9929, commonly called CUII, is China Unicom’s international premium route. It is separate from the general-purpose AS4837 network. The article explains that AS9929 uses dedicated international gateway capacity and a distinct autonomous system, which can reduce unnecessary detours, hop counts and contention with ordinary traffic.
The other major carrier-optimized routes discussed are China Telecom CN2 GIA and China Mobile CMIN2. Because the three networks are not interchangeable, a service targeting users from all mainland carriers may benefit from a three-carrier design rather than optimizing for only one ISP.
Peak-hour performance matters more than a label
VMRack reports that its reference testing typically sees 120-160ms latency from major mainland Chinese cities to the US West Coast during normal hours. During the 8 PM to 11 PM evening peak, the article says latency increases are generally limited to about 10%-15% and packet loss remains below 1% in its tests. These figures are provider-published observations, not a universal guarantee for every plan, IP or access network.
Ordinary BGP paths can show larger peak-hour spikes and intermittent packet loss when international egress capacity is congested. Buyers should therefore test the actual IP and not infer performance from a product label alone.
A practical testing method
Use ITDOG or another route-tracing service to inspect the path from several mainland locations. Check the autonomous system and the international gateway, then compare latency and packet loss during both daytime and evening peak hours. A single intermediate hop reporting loss is not automatically a problem because some routers deprioritize ICMP; persistent loss at the destination is more meaningful.
Route quality also depends on the data center’s upstream peering, available egress capacity, BGP session stability, convergence speed and DDoS protection. A premium ASN cannot compensate for an overloaded facility or weak recovery procedures.
VMRack’s stated approach
VMRack says its Los Angeles self-owned data center offers a premium VPS line combining CN2 GIA, AS9929 and CMIN2. The company highlights independent control over routing policy, MTU and TCP congestion tuning, along with multiple IPv4 addresses, private networking and large-bandwidth options.
For a cross-border website, API or SaaS deployment, this combination can simplify carrier coverage. It should still be evaluated with the application’s own traffic pattern, TLS handshake behavior, monitoring and failover plan.

AS9929 is valuable because it is a route architecture, not a magic speed number. The right selection process combines path tracing, peak-hour measurements, packet-loss analysis and data-center capability.
