Provider Overview
Samsung Pay, launched in 2015 by Samsung Electronics and headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, is a mobile payment and digital wallet service. Samsung Pay's unique differentiator is its support for both NFC (Near Field Communication) and MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) payment technologies—MST simulates the magnetic signal of a traditional card stripe, making it compatible with the vast majority of older POS terminals worldwide, giving Samsung Pay a distinct advantage in markets where NFC has not achieved universal adoption.
Samsung Pay serves over 100 million users across 30+ countries, with dominant market share in its home market of South Korea. Unlike Apple Pay which is limited to Apple devices, Samsung Pay spans the entire Galaxy product line including phones, smartwatches, and tablets, integrating bank cards, transit cards, loyalty cards, and access cards. Built on the Samsung Knox enterprise-grade security platform, Samsung Pay protects payment credentials at the hardware level.
Core Strengths
- NFC + MST Dual-Mode Technology: Samsung Pay is the only mobile payment solution globally supporting both NFC and MST. MST simulates magnetic stripe signals to work with legacy POS terminals, enabling contactless payments in emerging markets where terminals have not yet been upgraded for NFC. This advantage is particularly significant in Southeast Asia and South America.
- Full Samsung Ecosystem Integration: Samsung Pay is built into Galaxy phones (S/Note/Z series), Galaxy Watches, and Galaxy Tabs—users need no additional hardware. As Samsung Wallet (evolved from Samsung Pay), it also stores digital car keys, student IDs, health codes, and other digital credentials.
- Samsung Knox Hardware-Grade Security: Samsung Knox provides hardware-level security isolation from chip to OS, with payment credentials stored in a dedicated eSE (embedded Secure Element). Supports fingerprint, iris, and facial biometric verification, meeting financial-grade security certification standards.
- Rich Card Type Support: Samsung Pay supports not only bank card payments but also transit cards (bus/subway in multiple global cities), loyalty cards (supermarket, coffee shop reward programs), and access cards—one app managing multiple digital card types.
- Market Leader in South Korea: Samsung Pay commands over 80% market share in South Korea, with virtually all offline merchants accepting Samsung Pay payments. Deep partnerships with all major Korean banks including KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Woori, and Hana.
Product Ecosystem
Samsung Pay Payments
The core payment function supports in-store POS payments (NFC or MST), in-app payments, and web payments. Users authenticate via fingerprint or iris, then tap or bring their device near the terminal. In the Korean market, it also supports rapid payments for public transit, taxis, and vending machines.
Samsung Wallet
Samsung Wallet is the evolved version of Samsung Pay, adding digital keys (for select BMW/Kia models), student IDs, health codes, vaccination certificates, boarding passes, and event tickets—expanding beyond payments into a comprehensive digital credential management platform.
Samsung Pay Transit Cards
Samsung Pay transit card functionality enables phone or watch-based bus and subway payments across multiple global cities without unlocking the device. The Korean market supports T-money, Cashbee, and other transit cards; select European and Asian markets also support local transit card integration.
Samsung Pay Loyalty Cards
Users can integrate retailer loyalty cards and coupons directly into Samsung Pay, with automatic recognition and rewards stacking during in-store purchases. Currently supports retail loyalty cards across South Korea, the United States, Europe, and other markets.
Limitations
- Samsung Devices Only: Samsung Pay is exclusively available on Samsung Galaxy devices and cannot be used on iPhones or other Android brands (Xiaomi, Huawei, OPPO, etc.). Users must own Samsung hardware to access the service, limiting market penetration to Samsung's hardware footprint.
- China Service Discontinued: Samsung Pay China ceased service in March 2022 and is no longer available in mainland China. Cross-border users with China payment needs should use Alipay or WeChat Pay as alternatives.
- Merchant Coverage Trails Apple Pay and Google Pay: In North American and European markets, Samsung Pay has fewer merchant and banking partnerships than Apple Pay and Google Pay. Some US banks support only Apple Pay, not Samsung Pay.
- MST Technology Facing Phase-Out: As global POS terminals increasingly adopt NFC, Samsung Pay's MST advantage is diminishing. Samsung has begun reducing MST support in newer devices, transitioning toward NFC-only capability.

FAQ
-
What is the difference between Samsung Pay and Apple Pay? Samsung Pay supports both NFC and MST dual-mode technology, compatible with older POS terminals, but is limited to Samsung devices. Apple Pay supports NFC only but covers 80+ countries and works on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. See Mobile Payment Comparison.
-
Is Samsung Pay still available in China? No. Samsung Pay China ceased service in March 2022. Chinese users should use Alipay or WeChat Pay for mobile payments.
-
How does Samsung Pay's MST technology work? Users hold their Galaxy phone near the magnetic stripe reader slot of a POS terminal (without touching). Samsung Pay emits a magnetic stripe simulation signal via MST, which the terminal reads to complete the transaction. This technology is compatible with approximately 90% of older POS terminals.
-
Which devices support Samsung Pay? Samsung Galaxy S series (S6 and newer), Note series, Z series foldables, Galaxy Watch series smartwatches, and select Galaxy Tab tablets, all running Android 6.0 or later.
-
Is Samsung Pay secure? Samsung Knox provides hardware-level security with payment credentials stored in a dedicated embedded Secure Element (eSE), isolated from the main OS. Each payment requires fingerprint, iris, or facial verification, and tokenization ensures real card numbers are never shared with merchants.
